The profound 2001 Masia Carreras is an unfined/unfiltered, 300-case cuvee fashioned from a similar blend. From an outstanding vintage, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to full-bodied, powerful, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, acacia flower, and crushed rock characteristics. Layered and multidimensional, with superb purity and a fabulous noble stature, this terrific 2001 will drink well for a decade. Wow! What a discovery broker Jorge Ordonez made with these terrific wines from a sub-appellation of Ampurdan in the Costa Brava. Could Costa Brava be the next Priorat?

The tannins, oak, and acidity are well-integrated and the finish is pure and long. Drink it now and over the next 10-15 years. There are only 650 cases of this killer value. The 2003 Dignus is composed of 50% Tempranillo, 25% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in barrel (50% new) for 12 months. Medium ruby-colored, it exhibits an attractive perfume of spice box, cassis, and cherry. This is followed by an elegant wine with forward, juicy red fruits, excellent balance, and the structure to evolve gracefully for several years. It is also an excellent value.

The seriously endowed 2004 Altos de Luzon is a blend of 50% old vine Mourvedre (52 years) and equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo, aged 12 months in a combination of French and American oak. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by beautiful aromas of smoky licorice, black currants, cherries, and earth. Offering wonderful ripeness, an alluring texture, sweet tannin, and adequate acidity, it certainly over-delivers for its price. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.

The 2004 Crianza, from what appears to be a great vintage, is opaque purple in appearance. It emits scintillating aromas of smoke, toast, herbs, kirsch, and black fruits. It is a full-bodied, large-scaled effort with oodles of fruit and enough structure to age effortlessly for 6-8 years and drink well for a decade thereafter.

Readers looking for a longer-lived offering should check out the 2003 Altos de Luzon. A blend of 50% old vine Mourvedre, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Tempranillo, this deep ruby/purple-hued, medium to full-bodied 2003 possesses tremendous intensity as well as a more backward personality, impressive power, potent tannin, and a long, heady finish. Another 4-6 months of bottle age should result in a serious wine that may merit an outstanding rating. One of the oldest estates in Jumilla, Finca Luzon was founded by the Gil family in 1916. It has been a consistent source of high class values for a number of years, and readers should be happy to know this is completely certified organic agriculture. This offering represents a superb bargain.

Readers looking for something weighty, sweet, and provocative should check out the non-vintage East India Solera. A blend of soleras averaging 15 to 50 years of age, it boasts a dark amber color as well as a huge nose of melted toffee, caramel, figs, and prunes. This over-the-top yet surprisingly vibrant (because of good acidity) effort is best drunk as dessert at the end of a meal.

Rich and concentrated with coffee and caramel flavors in a balanced presentation. Picks up a grilled nut accent on the finish. Solid and complex, but not cloying. Drink now. –BS
